ABSTRACT :
I describe myself as a Pragmatist philosopher of science of a Peircean stripe. After receiving the kind invitation from Prof. Alin Ciobica to prepare an editorial presentation for the International Quintessence of Biomedical Research Journal, I will first present the image of science favored by the Pragmatist tradition and then illustrate how this journal, to my pleasant surprise, represents a significant step forward in the formation of an international scientific community that embodies the ideals of Charles Sanders Peirce’s vision of science.
To appreciate Peirce’s conception of science, we must abandon the modern stereotype of the scientist as a cold, detached calculator working in isolation. For Peirce, science is neither a static collection of established facts nor a purely mechanical methodology. Rather, it is a living, evolving, habit-forming, and sign-mediated collaborative enterprise directed toward concrete reasonableness and the pursuit of truth.
As reflected in the conceptual structure of this image of science, the Peircean perspective presents science as a dynamic, multilayered architecture in which theory and practice, logic and ethics, and individual intuition and community consensus are seamlessly integrated. Scientific agency does not reside in isolated individuals competing for recognition but in a community of inquiry committed to unlimited collaboration and the collective advancement of knowledge.
