ABSTRACT :

Dental implantology is one of the most advanced branches of modern stomatology, whose successful treatment is closely related to the bioengineering principles applied in the design of dental implants. Materials’ selection, implants’ geometry and the biomechanical behavior of the bone-implant system are important for obtaining primary stability and long-term osseointegration. The present paper aims at analyzing the main bioengineering principles utilized in dental implant designing, mainly biomimetic materials, design and distribution of mechanical tensions at alveolar bone level. Also discussed are the surface treatments and their impact on the implant-bone tissue biological interaction. Keywords: dental implants, bioengineering, biomaterials, biomechanics, osseointegration.
